Your First Stop When Visiting Green River

If you need more information on visiting Sweetwater County or finding the perfect camping spot on the Flaming Gorge, you should make the Green River Chamber & Visitor Center your first stop. Located right off i-80 on West Flaming Gorge Way, this building sits overlooking the Kill Deer Wetlands.
Green River is often called the Gateway to the Flaming Gorge, and it shows here, you can purchase all kinds of Flaming Gorge items that are supplied by the Intermountain Natural History Association (INHA). While visiting, make sure to check out the mining exhibit and the miner’s park.

Trona Mining and Miner’s Park

The Green River Chamber & Visitor Center has several displays and information on the area’s leading industry, Trona mining. Trona A.K.A Soda Ash is used in many of today’s products that we use, glass, laundry detergent, baking soda, and so much more. The area of southwestern Wyoming was once the prehistoric Lake Gosiute. When the lake evaporated, it left the area with the world’s largest Trona patch.
Are you interested in following the Trona Trail Historic Mine Byway? Ask the front counter workers to assist you with finding all the locations!
The local mines do not let outside people into the mines on tours anymore, but if you are still wondering what the machinery that does the work on mining looks like, walk outside the front doors of the visitor center and explore Miner’s Park. With informational signs at each piece of machinery, you can learn all about the mining process.

Annual Events

While you are at the visitor center, ask about any annual events that might be coming up! Typically you can get tickets to the Great Duck Race that takes place during River Festival in August each year. The best part of buying these tickets is that you don’t have to be present to win. They sell tickets for 1 for $5 and 5 for $20 and can be purchased here.
River Festival happens each August and is Green River’s celebration of the river! Green River’s river has significant importance to the town as it is one of the main reasons that Union Pacific Railroad put their headquarters in the Green River. The River Festival is host to some fun times with a Cajun Shrimp Boil, the Great Duck Race, a Run with the Horses Marathon, a Car & Bike Show, and so much more! Make sure to try to schedule a trip during this time of year to experience the River Festival!
